How to Manage Stress and Anxiety as a Floral Business Owner

Managing your own business is a bit like chasing around a puppy. You love it, but man can it tire you out.  As a floral business owner, you're responsible for the upkeep of a huge amount of things, and keeping on top of it all can be incredibly stressful. As someone who's been through it too, here are a few of the best ways to manage stress and anxiety as a floral business owner.

Find your problem areas

Knowing is half the battle, so take some time to identify the areas that stress you out the most. What keeps you up at night? What irritating little tasks consistently throw you off your groove? For a lot of business owners, this is emails, staff, and taxes.

Literally write down the biggest thorns in your side and start brainstorming some ways you can make these points less stressful. This might mean outsourcing them to a freelancer, or it might just mean setting up a better process. Either way, start with the tasks that give you the biggest headaches.

Prioritize your work

In every business, there are core business functions that can’t be ignored. Things like filling orders, coordinating staff, and buying your inventory are essential to fulfilling your obligations and keeping the doors open. And then there are secondary tasks that are still important (like marketing), but not do-or-die in the short run. Make sure that items of secondary importance aren’t overshadowing the real work that you have to get done today. Tweaking the font on that Facebook ad for an hour isn’t as critical as making sure your orders are getting met.

Get some rest

Your health is your most important asset, so taking some time off is really, really important. Giving your brain a little time off to recover is as important to your business as being productive, so don’t be afraid to put your phone down for an hour and go to bed early. The CDC found that 35% of adults don’t get the recommended 7 hours per day, but personally, I think that if they’d surveyed floral business owners that percentage would be much higher.

I hope that knowing your problem areas, focusing your energy, and getting some sleep will help your work be less stressful! Life is short, and as the old saying goes, don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
